May 22, 2020-The Milford Elks Lodge #1589 recently awarded Milford Food 2 Kids a $2000 check as part of the Elks National Foundation’s Gratitude Grant. Gratitude Grants are awarded to Elks Lodges that meet the National President’s per-member goal for giving to the Foundation financially. They are to be used for charitable purposes to support one of six broad categories: relief for the poor, distressed, or underprivileged; advance education or science, but not through scholarships; lessen the burdens of government; reduce neighborhood tensions; eliminate prejudice and discrimination; combat juvenile delinquency.
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the Elks National Foundation opened grant applications early this year to help local Lodges provide much-needed support and assistance to their communities. Milford Elks Lodge #1589 was pleased to present the $2000 grant to Food 2 Kids on May 22nd, 2020, to support their current collaboration with Milford Public Schools Food Services. Together Food 2 Kids and MPS ensure Milford children are fed every day during the current global pandemic.
To support Milford students during the shift to distance learning, MPS Food Services has been providing all school children under the age of 18 (who express need) with weekday breakfasts and lunches during the COVID-19 crisis and school closures.
Milford Food 2 Kids is working with MPS Food Services to supplement its offerings by providing weekend food for over 670 students in town. The Milford Elks Lodge #1589 voted to support this tremendous community effort to help supplement the cost to ensure our community children are fed every day.
The Milford Elks Lodge #1589 has supported the Milford Food 2 Kids programs for several years by awarding grant money, volunteering with food drives, packing food to be delivered to school students for the weekend, and even holding a First Responder Food 2 Kids Food Drive competition between Milford Police, Milford Fire, and Nelson ambulance.
